RFC: wiki.debian.org/Java

-----BEGIN PGP SIGNED MESSAGE-----
Hash: SHA1

Hi all,

Maybe you heard that Debian launch an official wiki. I was surprised to
see that someone (Tommi Vainikainen? Wolfgang Baer? PedroM? Paolo Pan?
ds13? Seo Sanghyeon? Ben Finney?.. Unknown? ;-)) already edited some
pages on this wiki.

First, I am surprised that the "index" page first mention non-free Java;
second, I'm surprised with the content of this page:http://wiki.debian.org/JREClaiming that the JRE can be redistributed unlike the JDK. If Dalibor is
reading this, I'm sure he fails from his seat! I think this page is just
not true.

I've not read all the pages but I'm going to do it. I'm very disapointed
to see that these pages does not seems to support free java as it is
supposed to be in Debian.

First, I'd like your comments on the JRE page and maybe on other pages;
second, I'd like your comments on moving java.debian.org to
wiki.debian.org/Java/... Using /Java/ something permits to subscribe
easily to the java related pages.

Maybe some pages on that wiki are old and have been imported from some
location I don't know.

Cheers,

That is the case. It was imported from wiki.debian.net, which was
largely edited by "users", who generally tend not to care about
freeness of Sun Java, and just want their Java applets to work on the
browser. Debian wiki currently also includes lengthy discussion of
installing Acrobat Reader (ugh) and Flash plugin.

Yes, I edited Java page to include java.debian.net and pkg-java link.
A cute little point for me? :-)

pages on this wiki.Yes, at the time the old content from wiki.debian.net was imported and
it was therefore possible to edit (wiki.debian.net was read-only), I took
the chance to initially remove the biggest nonesense there.

Afterwards I put it on my personal TODO list to come back some day and
really spend some time to make the page usable and consistent.
But that happened not yet as my TODO list every day gets bigger instead
of smaller :-)

RFC: wiki.debian.org/Java

Hi,

Paolo Pan is marked as being the last editor of wikideb/Java.
wikideb/JRE seems to be quite off the tracks, there is even some marketing
for Windows... :->
Pages in the Java section are generally rather old, beginning of the year.

As for consolidating wiki.debian.org/Java and java.debian.org, it's sure a
good idea, but it could be done either way: it looks to me it would be
less effort to link wikideb/Java to java.debian.org and move interesting
articles to java.debian.org than the other way around.
On the other hand, I don't know the effort related to maintenance of
java.debian.org?!

Cheers, Eric

OK, maybe everybody can join the effort ;-)

Maybe beginning of the year means ''imported'', I don't know.

Maybe you mean java.debian.net. This wiki is maybe too open... it's a
problem for spam. Also, I though maybe we could find some hardware to
host java.debian.net with a sid chroot and so we could install
tomcat5+kaffe and run some sample applications and some scripts to help
us in our tasks.

The server that java.debian.net is currently running on will be replaced
at the end of the year. If you want to move the contents of the Java
wiki to wiki.debian.org could you do this in the next weeks so I don't
have to migrate phpWiki to the new machine?

I can host tomcat5 on the new machine, but it will be running Ubuntu. If
that's not a problem, we can run them there.

We have to do it asap... volunteers?..

What is Ubuntu? ;-)

I think it's possible to have a debian sid chroot, isn'it? That way, we
could have really up-todate tomcat5+libs+kaffe and so on that machine.

Has something happened to the wiki at java.debian.net? When I try to
visit pages there I am getting the following:

lib/WikiDB/backend/PearDB.php:778: Fatal: wikidb_backend_mysql:
fatal database error

* DB Error: not locked
* (SELECT sess_data FROM session WHERE
sess_id='9657615256ed5f8fd42afadcb60cd5ab' )

I think the only last page is enough. If we wanna have a history of
packages that moved to main, we have the pkg-java mailing list, I don't
know why we should keep the changes of other pages?..

Comments...

at the end of the year. If you want to move the contents of the Java
wiki to wiki.debian.org could you do this in the next weeks so I don't
have to migrate phpWiki to the new machine?We have to do it asap... volunteers?..There seems to be a mostly working conversion script from phpwiki
to the moinmoin wiki used on wiki.d.ohttp://moinmoin.wikiwikiweb.de/PhpWikiMoinMoinConverterHowever it seems one needs to have access to both the phpwiki database
and the moinmoin hosting host. And i don't know if its usable if there
is already content in the moinmoin wiki.

As time is running away can anybody with access to phpwiki machine at least
dump the current state with revisions and put them somewhere we can access
them after the machine will be replaced ?

Another question is do we want the revisions or only the latest page ?
Then it could be mostly done by simple copying and do the formatting later
page by page ....

Wolfgang
