heeeeeelllllp! : FET returned NAK (twice)

Hi all,
I've searched the world over and have not found an answer to a question that few seem to have so I fear I've done something silly wrong, but can't find said silly error so I'm asking here for insight. Here is the deal:
Running linux 2.6.38-11-generic on Ubuntu 11.04.
Using the 6/12 release of the gcc-msp430 toolchain and mpsdebug.
Using TI MSP-FET430UIF with jtag connector to chipcon ccmsp-em430f2618 (msp430f2618 chip)

when I plug in the USB connector, the device powers up and is registered as /dev/ttyUSB0.

when I run mspdebug (as root), I get "FET returned NAK":

# mspdebug -j -d /dev/ttyUSB0 uif
MSPDebug version 0.16 - debugging tool for MSP430 MCUs
Copyright (C) 2009-2011 Daniel Beer
This is free software; see the source for copying conditions. There is NO

Trying to open UIF on /dev/ttyUSB0...
Initializing FET...
FET protocol version is 20105000
fet: FET returned NAK
fet: init failed
Trying again...
Initializing FET...
FET protocol version is 20105000
fet: FET returned NAK
fet: init failed

Any ideas what I can do?

Thanks to any who take the time...

Just to help any who may be looking, the author, Daniel Beer got back to me with the following:

It looks like your FET protocol version is a bit too old. There are two
ways that you can upgrade it. You can either use IAR or similar
software on Windows, or you could try the instructions here:

http://mspdebug.sourceforge.net/faq.html#fet_upgrade

Please be aware that this is slightly risky. If you lose power while
upgrading, you will brick your FET (unless you have a second FET that
you can use to recover with -- the FET uses an MSP430 interally).

Dear linuxmill,

I hope you could solve your FET-problem exactly the way Daniel mentioned. (by upgrading to a newer version)
Right now not a lot of people seemed to have a power-fail or copying-issue during firmware upgrade.
Anyway its better not to have to recover the device.

By the way I will post your question and answer to the MSPDebug section as well!

Have a good development!
